Crypto-Christian artworks and the Jesuit bell of Kyoto’s first church are the unlikely treasures you’ll discover in this Myoshin-ji sub-temple. Shunko-in even received visitors from the Vatican in recognition of its support for Christians while their religion was officially banned, and for burying the historic Bell of Nanban-ji to save it from being turned into World War II munitions. The temple offers thrice-daily tours and seated meditation lessons from the English-speaking vice-abbot.
