Like a B-lister’s house on the Hollywood Homes Tour, this temple struggles to impress amid such famous neighbours. It lacks the awesome dimensions of Higashiyama’s most popular sights, and draws a tiny fraction of their crowds - which is precisely why you should visit. Climb the lantern-lined approach and head into the second building on your left. Order a bowl of green tea, sit on the edge of the garden and enjoy the most peaceful place in the area. If you head further up, behind the main hall, you’ll reach the graveyards and some great views of the city.
