Eikan-do calls itself ‘the Temple of Maple Leaves’, but that’s a little modest for a complex that looks great all year round. Perhaps because it lies in the shadow of the mighty Nanzen-ji, this place of worship is a relatively calm and unfrequented attraction, except when the autumn leaves turn crimson and the crowds arrive. The temple dates from 853 and belongs to the Jodo-shu sect.
