Tea bowls priced from ¥2,000 to ¥50,000 (try to spot the difference), colourful tea caddies and a wide range of teas have kept this Teramachi store in business since 1803. The store has English-language printed explanations of the various teas, as well as a genial, English-speaking boss to answer any questions. Even though Teramachi now has hip-hop clothing stores and chain restaurants, Horaido remains resolutely old-fashioned, with a time-worn interior and traditional opening hours (the owner says that closing on certain days of the week, rather than the month, is a new-fangled idea that he has yet to adopt).
