Women are spoiled for choice when buying kimono in Kyoto; men have to look a little harder. The best place to start from is the store of Tokyo-born tailor Soyu Hyogo. Other outlets produce men’s kimonos for formal occasions, but Hyogo, who studied western and Japanese tailoring, designs his as everyday attire. You’ll find classic gents’ kimonos and jackets, as well as modern versions, complete with funky prints and even zips.
