Toyoaki Kuwayama, the son of a kimono-maker, launched the Kyoto Denim brand in 2008, and opened this dedicated store the same year. He uses kyo-yuzen, a painstaking kimono dyeing technique, to add elegant and traditional motifs to the waistbands and pockets of women’s jeans. The process of hand-drawing and dyeing each pair takes a full week, and prices reflect this. Sadly, cuts are made with the Japanese physique in mind, so no-one with a waist measuring above 76cm need pay the shop a visit.
