Karakami is the traditional woodblock-printed washi paper that adorns some of Japan’s poshest walls and sliding doors. Kyoto’s Karacho, established in 1624, is the only atelier still creating karakami in the authentic way, handpressing centuries-old woodblocks - although these days they apply their designs to business cards, envelopes and lampshades.
