When Tokyo’s Kabukiza theatre is demolished in 2010, the Minamiza will be unrivalled as the home of kabuki in Japan. The building dates from 1929, although there’s been a Minamiza in some form since the early 17th century. These days, the theatre plays host to various kinds of classical theatre arts, but the highlight of the year is still the Kaomise season, a kind of kabuki all-star show that runs each December to mark the start of the theatrical season.
