Tatsufumi ‘Nick’ Yamamoto was a nuclear power plant worker who quit his job when he found himself dreaming about safety levels. After a spell in Jamaica, he returned to Kyoto and opened Rub-a-Dub, a basement club that, but for the Japanese faces, could have been lifted straight from Kingston. The steel bar serves Red Stripe, jerk chicken and rums, while DJs play reggae and dancehall 45s. The punters are young, lively and seem not to mind being pressed against each other.
