JAPAN CONNECT Introducing the world to Japan's hidden gems

Jyugatsuya

The group that opened Japanese restaurant Zeniya set up this traditional Japanese restaurant brimming with the sensibility of Kanazawa’s-old Higashichaya. Set in a 140 year-old teahouse, a reception hall and counter seating and rooms seating up to six are available. No matter where you are seated, it’s possible to take in the scrupulous details of the garden while enjoying your meal. Ingredients for the dishes vary daily depending on availability and season. Lunch is a great time to visit, with its reasonable prices and bento boxes or udon noodles starting at ¥1,000. Bamboo basket bento are ¥2,750. For dessert, there are specialty desserts made with authentic kudzu starch, which make for a particularly unique experience. Dinner can be ordered either as kaiseki-ryori traditional course meals, á la carte, or as a course set. Options include soup, appetisers, two types sashimi, a grilled dish, a stewed dish, and dessert. Stewed dishes include the local Kaga-style cooked food, Jibuni.

Jyugatsuya’s producer Takagi Shinichiro tells more about the restaurant:

In the geishia quarters women play and almost theatrical leading part, and men can enjoy this exterior aspect. At Jyugatsuya, the women staff will greet customers at the front, standing in a line before retiring to the interior kitchen to prepare their dishes.

So many of our customers from abroad get a deep impression from eating our handmade kudzu-kiri, so much so that they tell us they would like to try to make it at home. Because of this, we have kudzu flour available for purchase.

Our desserts can also be ordered tea-house style.
