Kanazawa has a 99% share of the gold leaf manufactured in Japan. The industry was established in early 16th century under the governance of the domain of Maeda. Hakuichi is a facility which features a museum and a shop. On the first floor, you can see how the craftsman stretches the gold leaf to make it thinner. On the second floor, you can purchase products including porcelains, lacquer ware, stationery and even skin care treatments containing precious metal ingredients.
Tetsu Takemoto, Managing Director, makes a detailed explanation of the items:
‘The manufacturing process for the gold leaf includes 9 steps: Kaneawase, Nobekane, Koppehikiire, Sumiuchi, Watashishigoto, Sumikiri, Sumihikiire, Uchimae (Hakuuchi) and Hakuutsushi.’
‘We purchase the gold mainly from South Africa and in Australia.’
‘If you want to collect gold leaf items, I recommend starting with gold-leaf versions of usual items that you might have in one of your rooms. They might be cups and plates for those who like tableware, and panels and flower vases for those who are interested in interior coordination. It might also be a good idea to start with items you use on a daily basis, such as cosmetics and the tissue paper.’
‘The gold leaf manufactured in Japan is the thinnest, and has the most stable quality when compared with its competitors manufactured in Europe and in China.’
‘Visitors from foreign countries like cosmetics containing the fold leaf tips best. KINKA cosmetics contain not only a plenty of colloidal platinum and gold leaf, but also plant extracts which makes them gentle on the skin. The almost mystical healing effect of the gold leaf and the anti-oxidation effect of the colloidal platinum also have mental health benefits.’
