Originally specialising in handcrafting Buddhist altar articles and utensils for tea ceremony, in 2001 Nousaku started creating a line of products such as bells, wind chimes, vases, metal sake dinner sets and the like using cleaner, contemporary designs (mostly made of tin, as well as brass and other metals). The surfaces of these metal products, unlike other ordinary items, are intentionally made to look rough for design effect. In the current line, the best selling items are the tin-based KAGO series (which come in handy as an iPod holder), which users can bend in whatever shapes as they please. Doing away with distribution middlemen, the company is selling directly to consumers. As such, these new items now account for 54% of the company’s total sales. They’re on sale at the Mitsukoshi flagship store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
Katsuji Nousaku, CEO, talks in the following about the Nousaku items:
‘Traditional industries dwell upon divisions of labour, and we, as a manufacturer, have long distributed our products through wholesalers, selling our technical arts only without having to heed the final prices and the consumers’ faces. But, wishing to develop our products as we see our users’ faces, we have switched to product development with the mantra of “good materials and design”.’
‘The first item we produced was a wind chime. Now we have the tone of our wind chime used in an iPhone application.’
‘My favourite thing is the KAGO series, which you can bend freely in any shape you like. The item I particularly recommend is a beer cup made of 100% tin, which is said to enhance the flavour of beer.’
‘The purchase price for our items ranges from 800 on the low end to 30,000 on the high end.’
‘Our products are available for purchase online from our website.’

Thanks for the great article about Nousaku. Unfortunately they only ship within Japan through their online shop. But there are a few other shops listing Nousaku with worldwide shipping. http://www.anything-from-japan.com/nousaku-casting-shop-s/2102.htm
