Some ryokan refuse foreign guests, others welcome them. This one insists on them: since the 1950s, only non-Japanese guests have been able to book a room at this popular inn. The location, which lies a block north of Heian Jingu, is great for those who like their Kyoto surroundings to be tranquil and picturesque, less so for anyone who wants to feel the pulse of the city. Rooms are designed in a Japanese style and are great value (the inn keeps prices low by not offering dinner). There is also a nearby annexe, in which en suite bathrooms are a feature of all the rooms.
