The Kyoto Royal may have opened in 1972, but its rooms underwent a complete makeover in June 2014. The singles are named ‘Superior Singles’ and it’s not such an outlandish conceit - they’re spacious and well-appointed, so long as you aren’t fussy about having a big bathroom. In the suites, however, the bathrooms are a highlight, furnished with multi-headed massage showers. The titular spa is the kind you find in the world’s best hotels, with treatments like traditional Japanese massages and foot reflexology, while they also boast an extensive lineup of Shiseido cosmetics products.
